PLACE VALUE SONG Click on the link to hear the song we have been singing to help us with place value!

We have been learning so many wonderful things! In math this week we have been learning about comparing numbers, writing numbers in expanded form, odd and even, and ten more/ten less than a number.

Take a look at us working hard!

Read to Self

Today we worked really hard on the first part of our Daily 5. First, we came up with a list of things we think every student should do during Read to Self.

Our goal is to become better readers.

We think the students should:
*track their reading
*read the pictures, words, and retell
*use a quiet whisper voice
*stay in one spot
*pick a spot where you won't talk
*keep your eyes on the book
*get started RIGHT AWAY
*pick a "just right" book
*read the WHOLE time

We think Miss Leach should:
*work with reading groups
*help children
*listen to children read

Reading Fluency

Today we took our first fluency tests of the year. We now know our starting points, so we will be working really hard to meet our fluency goals! Each child brought home a practice fluency passage today. Please make sure they practice each night and sign off on the goal tracking sheet. The students will bring home a new passage each week. READ READ READ!!!!

**Great Job to Sophie and Cameron...both of them took an AR Test today! WAHHHOOO!

Today we learned how to choose books that are "just right" for us as a reader. Finding a "just right" book is so important, because reading these books will help you grow as a reader. We used IPICK to help us remember how to choose a "just right" book.

I choose a book.
Purpose - Why do I want to read it?
Interest - Does it interest me?
Comprehend - Am I understanding what I am reading?
Know - I know most of the words. (5 finger rule)*If you miss more than 5 words on the first page the book is a too hard.

We decided that books are like shoes.

There are many different kinds of books, but you must look for what interests you and what your purpose is. We would not wear rain boots to the beach, and we wouldn't wear shoes that were way too big for us either. Shoes have to fit just right to serve their purpose. Books are the same way. We must find books that fit... JUST RIGHT BOOKS!

**Everyone is doing a great job with their money. We even had a few students figure out today that they could pay their $15 for recess with three $5 bills! :) GREAT JOB! (We had been paying with one $10 and one $5.)

First Week

We have had a WONDERFUL first week of second grade. We are already doing so much learning and thinking. Today we learned all about a calendar. Did you know that you can keep track of important dates using a calendar? We made sure to write down all of the birthdays for this month on our own calendars. We also learned what it means to be a growing writer. We are going to be practicing these skills next week as we write in our writing journals. We are now experts at making math journal entries! We write down our thinking in math. The journal is a great way for us to keep track of what we have learned in math. Ask your student how to make a math journal entry. What do we always start with? (That is right! The date and the time.) Students also began earning Winn Bucks today. Every person earned at least 20 dollars today! Way to go! We are saving up for some great prizes and treats. We can't wait until Monday! We are hard workers. We have so much to learn!

Congratulations to Sophie for already getting a 100% on an AR test! Waaahhoo!

Also, if you click on Shelfari, under the Links, you can see the books that we read together in class today. I really enjoyed having the students today, and I am already looking forward to tomorrow! Feel free to leave us comments on our blog, or ask us questions. We would love to hear from parents, families, or friends!
